Health Insurance for Unemployed Workers

Health Insurance for Unemployed WorkersHealth Insurance for Unemployed WorkersOne of the biggest concerns for unemployed workers, besides the loss of a paycheck, is the loss of health insurance. Health insurance is very important to have, but it can be expensive. What options for health insurance coverage are available, and how can you access health insurance coverage when you have lost your job? Know what your options are so that you can select a form of health insurance that works for your situation. Company-Provided Health Insurance If youre laid off, your employer should review the benefits you are entitled to receive when you leave employment. Ask your employer about your eligibility for continuing to stay on the companys health plan through the federal law COBRA. According to COBRA, if the company you are leaving has over 20 employees, it is mandated by law to offer health insurance coverage to terminated employees for at least 18 months. COBRA applies to employees who volu ntarily or involuntarily leave their jobs, or who stay at a company but lose their insurance (due to changes in their hours, for example). The benefit of COBRA is that you can stay on your current health insurance plan, which means you can see the same doctors you have been seeing. However, the downside is that you need to pay for this coverage (plus an additional administrative fee). Keep in mind that you have a 60-day window of time to enroll in COBRA after you leave your job, so look into this option quickly. In some cases, employers will pay for coverage for a limited time as part of aseverancepackage. Therefore, it is important to talk to your employer (or your companys human resources department) before you leave, so you know what your coverage options are. The Affordable Care Act Under the federal law the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), unemployed workers can also find health insurance through the governments Health Insurance Marketplace. The Marketplace provides individ uals a way to purchase health insurance. Normally, people need to apply for health insurance in the Marketplace during a particular enrollment period. However, if you leave a job outside of the normal enrollment period, you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period. This means that, once you leave your job, you have a 60-day enrollment window to shop and enroll in a health plan through the Marketplace. Your health insurance options (and costs) will vary depending on your income and household size. Check With Your State Before deciding on an insurance plan, check with your state insurance department. Some states have people apply for insurance through the federal Marketplace, while other states have a state-based marketplace. If coverage is available through your state, the cost of the coverage (and the ability to participate) usually depend on your income and the number of people in your family. More Insurance Options If you lose your job or are otherwise unemployed, there are a few other options for finding health insurance. Below are some options you can look into Medicaid provides free or low-cost health insurance to some people based on particular factors. People who receive Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), also commonly known as welfare, automatically qualify for Medicaid. Other people also may qualify based on their income and resources for example, low-income people, pregnant women, the elderly, people with disabilities, and others qualify. Find out if you qualify for Medicaid.TheChildrens Health Insurance Program (CHIP) is a free or low-cost health insurance plan for children that qualify. Find out whether your children qualify for CHIP. If you are under 26 and unemployed, you can get on your parents insurance plan. Qualifying children need bedrngnis be full-time students or dependents.Insurance companies and various schools alumni association may offer temporary insurance in your state.Unions, trade associations, and members-only warehouse clubs like BJs Wholesale Club and Costco may also offer various forms of health insurance. Tips for Finding Health Insurance When Unemployed There are also other health insurance options available. Steve Trattner, President and Chief Marketing Officer of Cinergy Health, shares his health insurance tips for unemployed workers Talk to your employer. Before leaving your job, make sure you talk to your employer in detail about your benefits (including insurance) to get a sense of when these will end. This information will help you make a decision about what kind of insurance you will need.Start shopping for individual insurance early. Insurance is complicated, and you dont want to make a rash or uneducated decision. Start early so that you can thoughtfully weigh your options. You also dont want to start shopping late, because you might end up uninsured for a brief time period. This can be both dangerous and costly. Avoid paying a penalty. Another reason to shop for insuran ce early is that you have to make a payment to the federal government (also known as a penalty, or individual mandate) if you dont have what is considered qualifying health coverage. For any month you do not have insurance, you will have to pay. There are exemptions depending on your circumstances (including your income), but this is just another reason to avoid going without health insurance for any period of time.Have your information ready. Whether you are applying for COBRA or going on the federal or state Marketplace, you will need to have some information ready. Be sure you know your income and the number of dependents in your household. You may also need your Social Security Number, tax information, and information about your current or previous health insurance plan. Evaluate health plan optionsbased on your individual (or family) healthcare needs. For example, health insurance plans might permit you to select a high deductible, say $5,000, in order to get a very low afforda ble premium. This schriftart of plan will provide coverage if you face a catastrophic medical event but isnt going to cover your routine and predictable healthcare needs. There are also short-term plans available that expire at the end of a 6 or 12-month term and cost much less than major medical plans. Think about what plan will work best for you. Choosing a policy that doesnt include several treatment facilities is also an optionto lower your premium rates. There are low-cost, limited medical plans that provide coverage for an individuals more immediate needs, like routine doctor visits and short-term hospital stays, without a deductible. Review Options Its important to know that you have limited time to decide on health care options, so carefully review options for maintaining coverage as soon as possible after your employment terminates. The information contained in this article is not legal advice and is not a substitute for such advice. State and federal laws change freque ntly, and the information in this article may not reflect your own states laws or the fruchtwein recent changes to the law.

Theory X and Theory Y to Pick the Best Management Style

Theory X and Theory Y to Pick the Best Management StyleTheory X and Theory Y to Pick the Best Management StyleIf the last time you thought about finding and using X and Y welches your high school algebra class, you probably havent heard about the Theory X and Theory Y management style. Developed in the 1960s by Douglas McGregor in his book, The Human Side of Enterprise, Theory X and Theory Y allocate the job of management into two styles. And, just like your algebra class, X and Y dont work totally independently, although you can manage in a style that is mostly a Theory X or Theory Y management style. Your management style evolves as you gain cues from your work environment, the type of work you need to accomplish, the locus of control of your workforce (intrinsically driven or externally), the strength and talent of your workforce, and your ultimate beliefs about how people are motivated. The variables explain why in some situations, you will find the Theory X management style more effective. In others, you will find the Theory Y management style necessary to lead people. In yet a third setting, a combination of the two management styles will help you achieve your goals. Here is what you need to know to understand and apply both the Theory X and the Theory Y management styles. Theory X Management Style The underlying idea with Theory X management style is that humans are inherently lazy and will only work if the manager is forcing them to work. Without a manager standing there saying, get back to work, bedrngnishing will happen. This style makes the assumption that humans only work because they have to work, so the motivation to work must come from an external source- the manager. Theory YManagement Style In Theory Y management style, people gain self-worth from doing meaningful work. If the work is fulfilling, the employees will do a good job because its important to them. You can see how these two theories can conflict and yet have a lot of crossove rs. Its possible to have both situations true for a manager, depending on the job and the person. Some people are lazy and some are motivated by the desire to do a good job. The question is, how can you, as a manager or HR manager, use these theories to make your company a better place to work? What Type of Work Do You Do? Some work is boring. It is. Its why it is called work. Many things that make the world go round are boring and tedious. You may think that this type of work calls for you to apply the Theory X management style. The only reason people take these jobs is that they cant find anything better and they would rather do anything other than that work. Therefore, theyll slack off if youre not standing there with a proverbial whip in your hand to get them into shape. Many screaming and frustrated managers agree with this concept. Seriously, how many times do you have to tell your employees to get off their phones and back to work? Change the Value Proposition to Gain Employee Commitment But, stop and think about the value of what youre really doing. If the work didnt have value, people wouldnt hire your business and youd be out of business. So what value does your business bring? Lets say your company provides janitorial services. Cleaning a toilet isnt terribly inspiring. But, if you look at the great public health service you provide, you might develop a different viewpoint with your employees. That type of description sounds like a valuable job. Additionally, if you focus on how doing a good job here can lead to better opportunities in the future, you may be able to change your employees internal motivation. From X to Y. Many white collar jobs seem to fall under Theory Y management style. People want to be engaged, look for jobs that are fulfilling, and work long hours to succeed. Managers can stand back and allow employees to just do their work. Is Theory X Ever the Right Way to Manage? Some managers cant get the Theory X management sty le out of their heads. Thats how you end up with micro-managers who judge employees based on facetime, ersatzdarsteller check everything employees do and control every aspect of the work process. This sounds like a terrible work environment. However, there are employees who need this kind of prodding from their manager. Some people dont do a good job and could care less about the business, the clients, or a job well done. The best outcome for your business is not to hire this type of person in the first place. But recognize that if your pay and prestige are low, you may end up with this type of workers more often than not. If thats the case, you may need to micro-manage the employees to get the work done, even if micromanaging doesnt lead to better employee engagement. When Theory X and Theory Y Run Into Conflict If you have employees who are intrinsically motivated and you treat them like they are slackers who wont work if you take your eyes off them, theyll hate you and quit. If you have employees who are slackers and you treat them like they are self-motivated, youll end up pulling your hair out when nothing gets done. Getting the right match between the managers management style and the need of each employee for supervision is one of the key secrets to business success. Some employees do need micro-managing. Other employees will not stand for a micro-manager. The best solution is to hire the right people all of the time employees who are intrinsically motivated and who you can trust to do the work without supervision. That, however, isnt always easy to do and you may find yourself with a team that needs a lot more managing than youd like to do. You can, however, through hard work, and the re-evaluation of tasks, help teach people to become more independent, but, its not an easy task. If you can succeed though, self-motivated employees are the best for your business. - Suzanne Lucas is a freelance writer who spent 10 years in corporate human resources, where she hired, fired, managed the numbers, and double-checked with the lawyers.

10 Valuable Tips on How to Write a Perfect Cover Letter

10 Valuable Tips on How to Write a Perfect Cover Letter10 Valuable Tips on How to Write a Perfect Cover LetterCover letters present a challenge to potential employees and executives who are going to start their profession or are in the mid of their professional career. Combining brevity with impact-fulness is no easy feat. Fortunately, like all things, a few tips can make all the difference in addition to your perfect resume or CV. For those looking to learn how to write a perfect titel letter, look no further. Below are 10 valuable tips to guide you through the process from starting to finish, ensuring preparation of perfect cover letter that wows potential employers.1. Address the Cover Letter Correctly.First, you want to address your cover letter correctly to avoid the dreaded, To Whom It May Concern opening. Take the extra step by finding the name of the hiring manager/recruiter. A quick Google search, finding a person whos near to him or phone call is all you need.2. Use a Cover Letter Template.A cover letter template will serve as a starting point and provide a little guidance when writing. The layout of your letter must remain organized and professional.3. Identify Keywords Before Writing. This is on the list of 10 tips to write a perfect cover letter because it is often overlooked. Keywords are needed because they put more focus on the goal scoring an interview and ultimately, the position. As for how to select these keywords, focus on the skills required for the job to highlight that youre more than qualified, results-oriented keywords (initiated, updated, implemented, produced) and lastly, recognition keywords and phrases like recognized, received a naturalrabatt for, credit for, etc.4. Make the First Sentence Epic.Okay, maybe not epic but it must be impressive. Proactive approach is the best. Means try to answer that question which you may expect later on from your potential employer. Think of that first sentence as your sole opportunity to grab the r eaders attention. Dont be boring by opting to restate the position youre applying for. The hiring manager/recruiter already knows that. Instead, go with a bold, pitch-like approach. A mention of a network connection is equally effective. This point is the most important to put your maximum focus on it, as editing wouldnt be possible once you send it.5. Focus Your Cover Letter on the Company. This is your chance to distinguish yourself from other applicants while showing genuine interest in the company. Companies are looking for individuals who have something valuable to offer so focus on how you can make a difference while highlighting your best professional attributes.6. Do Not Recap Your Resume.Consider a cover letter as a precursor to the actual resume. Potential employers will venture past that first page, so theres no reason to provide a quick summary. Instead, it should be a unique read with a different focus. Again, a cover letter is your opportunity to intertwine presenting y ourself as an excellent candidate with what you can bring to the table for a specific company. For example, an insurance salesperson may want to mention how their confident and authoritative communication skills and passion for selling will help the company meet the 15% sales increase mentioned in their most recent press release. Another example would apply to those seeking a position in e-commerce retail. Stating how your experience with multi-channel retail can improve the companys current profit margin will surely make you a standout. When applying for positions, you must compose a letter for each. That is why cover letters are addressed to a specific recipient. They must be customized and designed for each position.7. Keep It Brief.Three paragraphs are all you need. Hiring managers/recruiters have several applicants to consider and, therefore, only spend about 10 seconds reading cover letters. Concise yet impactful is the goal. Paragraph one serves as the introduction, paragraph two is the body, and the third is the conclusion. To be more specific, paragraph one is where you hook your reader and share why youre interested in the position. As for the second paragraph, this is where you intertwine your passions and skills. More details can be found in tip eight along with a four-step quick guide. As for the conclusion, this is where you wrap your cover letter on a high note. Instead of the passive, I hope to hear from you soon, go for a strong ending like the phrases belowI will call you next Wednesday to follow up on my application and arrange for an interview. If offered this position, I am prepared to help Company 123 exceed its growth and expansion goals.I do not doubt that both my expertise and passion for this industry will grow due to the opportunities Company 123 provides to employees.8. Sell Your Personality.Another on the list of 10 tips to write a perfect cover letter is highlighting your positive traits. You want to do this in the second paragraph. Give employers some insight into your character as well as a peek of your passion for the position and where you excel in the workplace. All will make you a very worthy candidate. Since few examples apply to a broad range of positions, heres how to compose your second paragraph in four simple steps.Start with a written display of your best personality traits. The show, dont tell. (1-2 sentences)Use the displayed traits as a segue to mention one to two industry-related passions that relate to the position youre applying for. (1 sentence)Connect the said passions to the area(s) you excel at in the workplace. (3 sentences maximum)winzigkeit on how that will benefit the company. It may include increased morale, boost productivity, sales, etc. (1-2 sentences)9. Proofread.Make sure to proofread your cover letter once or twice. Check for spelling, grammatical, and punctuation errors as well as flow and overall readability. Even have a friend or family member look it over. Perfect cover le tters are very brief, so errors are inexcusable. A letter riddled with errors displays carelessness and no attention to detail.10. Send as a PDF.You want to send your cover letter as a PDF because anyone can open a PDF without conversion whether they are on a computer or mobile device. Furthermore, it eliminates the chance that your formatting will compromise. Sending in another format can cost you the job. If a file conversion is required to read your letter, hiring managers may just move on to the next applicant. They simply do not have the time.Final remarks. That concludes how to write a perfect cover letter Follow these 10 tips while writing your cover letters and you will compose letters to be proud of. Otherwise, you will be at the helm of the cover letter writing tafelgeschirr online, who are certified in this profession, to write your cover letter. There are lots of pretty fonts, but should you combine them lubberly the entire work wont be well worth any attention. The broad A is likely to make your name pop if it consists of the letter. When writing yourresume header, your name should be two or three sizes bigger than the remainder of your writing. You will have more to sort through, but a lot of them are also available freely to the general public. Unless an expected employer demands one page, feel free to create your resume two pages. 5 Bold text is very good for drawing particular attention to some words. Needless to say, the font doesnt offer whole details about a candidate, but it complements the picture that could be gotten by analyzing the text of a CV. Adjusting the font just one-tenth of a point can produce the text fill out the remainder of a page or stop it fr om spilling over into the subsequent one. 7 steps for transforming from who you are to who you want to be

7 steps for transforming from who you are to who you want to be7 steps for transforming from who you are to who you want to beHumans are elend meant to stop growing. In fact, no living thing on earth is meant to stop growing. We are all alive, reaching for the sun.Progress in life is all about reinvention.I am going to preface all of this by saying that reinvention is bedrngnis the same thing as endlessly seeking reward or achievement. There is a difference.landseeking an achievement usually implies an end. You win the trophy and then youre done. Thats not what you want to aim for - because as soon as you say youre done, you are no longer reaching and stretching yourself, which means you stop growing.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreReinvention, however, leaves the end open - which is actually a goodthing.Reinvention is what allows you endless opportunities to continue exploring new parts of yourself.Exploration is growth, and growth in this sense is not outward facing but inward. Whenever you find something about yourself you want to change, you need to look for a way to reinvent it.1. See yourself outside yourself.Imagine you are a sculptor.A sculptor looks at his or her piece of stone and endlessly questions new ways to shape it. And if he or she thinks of something to change, there is no emotional attachment. They just do it.This is how you need to see yourself - as a work of art, always in progress. No need to get upset, or come down hard on yourself when you see something you do not like.Instead, like an artist, just get to work.2. Find the habit associated with the thing you want tochange.Far too often, people focus too much on the thing they want to change instead of the habits that formed the thing in the first place. For example They try to solve being overweight with doing a lot of ab exercises, without acknowledging that the problem is their poor diet.To truly reinvent aspects of yourself, you have to find the habit that created that trait in the first place - and then adjust the habit.3. Practice every day, no matterwhat.Change is not something you do some days and then take a break from other days.Change is a shift in lifestyle. It requires daily dedication, to the point where that new habit takes the place of an old one and no longer requires conscious effort.4. Set realistic goals. You cant just wake up one morning and say, Im not going to be impatient anymoreYes, you are.And you actually help yourself by acknowledging that a bad habit like that wont be solved immediately. Instead, set the goal to be more patient during your team meeting that happens every morning. Use that as an isolated practice space and subconscious reminder of what it is you want to practice.Focus on that for a few weeks, and then go from there.5. Constantly look in themirror.Things get dangerous when you refuse to stop and really look at yourself - when you avoid self-reflection.There is a time and a place for go go go mode, and then there is a time and place for reflection mode. Both are necessary. And you will quickly find that unless you take the time to ask yourself the tough questions, you will fall off track and not know how you got there.6. Surround yourself with people who will tell you thetruth. If everyone around you is telling you yes, then you have a serious problem. You need people who are going to challenge and question you. You need people who wont be afraid to tell you the truth.Tough feedback is essential for personal growth.7. You have to takerisks. You will never become the person you want to be by continuing to be the person you currently are. Growths only request is that you step out of your comfort zone. Thats it. And unless you are willing to take that risk, to take that uncomfortable leap into the unknown, you will forever stay exactly where you are.Reinvention is anart. It is a process. It is not a quick fi x or an overnight solution. It is a deliberate practice, day in and day out, until you realize who it is you want to be, you already were all along. This article originally appeared on Inc. Pity the Educated Man for He Shall Be Remorseful

Pity the Educated Man for He Shall Be RemorsefulPity the Educated Man for He Shall Be RemorsefulNew research on regret tells us about the causes of our biggest sorrows. In order of anguish, we regret things related to romance, then family, education, career, finance and parenting. Those are the top six sources of regret. Turns out the mora educated people are, the more likely they are to feel pangs of remorse.Women, who tend to value social relationships more than men, have more regrets of love (romance, family) compared to men. Conversely, men were more likely to have work-related (career, education) regrets. Those who lack either higher education or a romantic relationship hold the most regrets in precisely these areas.Americans with high levels of education had the most career-related regrets. Apparently, the more education obtained, the more acute may be the sensitivity to aspiration and fulfillment. Moreover, the youngest and least-educated people in our sample, who most likely possess the greatest capability of fixing their regrets, were indeed the most likely to provide fixable regrets.via MindhacksPhoto credit Kellogg School of Management
